Título

BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES PROMOTED BY EXERCISE IN THE CEREBELLUM: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW.

Introdução

Physical exercise (PE) can induce changes in the central nervous system (CNS), including the modulation of oxidative balance in regions like the motor cortex, hippocampus, brainstem, and cerebellum. The cerebellum is particularly susceptible to changes from PE due to its high energy demand and production of reactive oxygen species related to motor function. Therefore, it is essential to understand how physical exercise impacts this brain region.

Objetivo (s)

This study aimed to conduct a systematic review to investigate whether PE promotes improvements in the oxidative balance of the cerebellum.

Material e Métodos

We employed the PICO strategy: animal studies (P) that performed physical exercise (I) and were compared with those that did not perform physical exercise (C) to verify if PE can promote changes in the cerebellar enzymatic antioxidant system (O). Online searches were conducted without restrictions on publication date and language in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and textbooks in the references listed in the included articles. From the selected references, data were extracted and tabulated. Additionally, methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the SYstematic Review Center for Laboratory Animal Experimentation (SYRCLE) risk of bias tool.

Resultados e Conclusão

We identified 2086 references in the databases. Subsequently, 143 duplicates were removed, and after reading titles and abstracts, 1993 were excluded based on eligibility criteria, leaving 10 articles for full-text reading. Finally, 4 were excluded for other reasons, and 6 were selected. The enzymatic antioxidant system was evaluated by analyzing the enzymes SOD, GSH, CAT, GSSG, GR, and GPX, as well as lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). PE interventions were conducted using treadmills for rats, with control of exercise frequency, volume, and intensity. PE is capable of modulating most of the enzymes that make up the antioxidant system, including SOD, CAT, GR, and GSH-Px, as well as LPO. High volume PE caused impairments. No changes were observed at low intensity. Moderate intensity protocols promote benefits to the antioxidant system. PE does not modulate all the enzymes that make up the antioxidant system but can improve oxidative balance in the cerebellum, depending on the manipulation of volume and intensity variables.
